Breastfeeding Lifesaver: Mommy Mix

Happy World Breastfeeding Week! I’ve had so many friends give birth in the last few weeks, it’s insane. As such, I’ve gotten to go visit new squishy newborns to my heart’s content. By now, hopefully you know the basics of visiting parents of newborns (keep it short and sweet, leave your little at home and bring foods!!!) As a relatively crunchy mom, I also like to take care of mommies’ other major need in the first few weeks: breastfeeding!
No, I don’t nurse their babies but I do bring one of my favorite treats from when I was new to breastfeeding: a galactogogue-filled trail mix. What is a galactogogue, you ask? Let me tell you! It’s a substance that is believed to boost breastmilk production. Some galactogogues I enjoy are nuts, oatmeal, apricots and carrots. At the beginning, producing enough milk for baby can be a huge stress for new mommies. This trail mix is delicious and super simple to assemble.

Active Time: 5 minutes | Cooking Time: Big fat goose egg!

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups sliced roasted almonds
  • 1.5 cups roasted cashews
  • 1.5 cups dried cherries
  • 1.5 cups dried apricots, diced
  • 1 cup unsweetened shaved coconut
  • 1 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips

Directions

Dump all ingredients into a large bowl or gallon sized bag and stir or shake until well combined. Store trail mix in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
